OVERVIEW ON FINLAND’S MINING CLUSTER Finland has systematically developed its mining cluster. Today the cluster strongly consists of more than ten mining related universities and research organizations, more than 200 mining technology and service providers, over 40 mines and ten smelters and steel mills. Consequently, Finland is considered as one of the most attractive mining jurisdictions in the world due to not only its geology but also its well developed and innovative mining ecosystem. Finland is an excellent hub for mining technology development, which hosts leading education, research, and development facilities. The Finnish government strongly supports research organizations and private companies to develop green and sustainable mining technologies. MINING FINLAND Mining Finland is a membership-fee-funded co-operation association for mining ecosystem actors in Finland, aiming to: -Enhance co-operation and networking among the industry actors for R&D and business developments. -Promote exports from Finland members’ technologies, services and products. -Gather and deliver information of domestic and international business opportunities within the industry. -Promote Finland as a mining investment target for international investors. -Facilitate member organizations´ international networking and partnership. -Facilitate commercialization of innovations and create new start-ups. Activities in particular: -Organizing domestic and international seminars and workshops, -Organizing joint domestic and international trade show delegations, -Publishing news of member organizations´ activities and achievements in social media, -Gathering member organizations´ technology, service and product offering on its association website, -Assisting in searching R&D funding, -Coordinating joint R&D project preparation and implementation, Membership is possible for mining, investor or other companies who have activities in Finnish mining sector. Mining waste can contain large quantities of dangerous substances, such as heavy metals. Extracting and processing metals and metal compounds can result in acid or alkaline drainage. Mining Finland is promoting its members’ innovative solutions and technologies in mining waste recycling. It will prevent or minimize water and soil pollution arising from acid or alkaline drainage and the leaching of heavy metals.
