Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) is the largest iron ore producer on the Pacific coast, the main exporter of this metal in Chile, and represents 1% of the world’s iron ore production. With more than 100 years of history, the mining company is promoting a new corporate strategy to innovate in iron ore mining based on the management of its processes, promoting sustainable operations for the territory and its people in the regions of Atacama and Coquimbo.
From this vision, CMP will participate as a strategic partner in Expomin 2023, which will be held from April 24 to 26. During the fair, the company will unveil a series of guidelines ranging from its plans for gender equality, diversity and inclusion to the measures it implements in the area of sustainability.
“We believe it is important to participate in the fair and share with the community that at CMP we have defined a path to create a different kind of mining and move towards the sustainability of our operations and communities, recognizing the value of the diversity of people and the energy that arises from our processes,” said Francisco Carvajal, general manager of CMP.
First mining company with an equal number of male and female managers
In March of this year, the company became the first mining company to achieve gender parity in executive positions, increasing the participation of women in these roles from 40% to 50%, thanks to internal succession changes and consolidating the company’s commitment to progress in equity, inclusion and diversity.
Among the appointments is that of Makarina Orellana, the first woman to become the Operations Manager of a Chilean mining company. “It is certainly a source of pride, and at the same time a great challenge, but at CMP we have the challenge of creating more inclusive and diverse environments, incorporating new perspectives that help to make more effective and strategic decisions,” she said.
Thus, 29% of the company’s assistant managers and superintendencies are headed by women, and they have managed to reach 15% of total female staff within the company, more than double the figure for the 2012-2018 period (7.4%) and above the average for the national mining industry.
The axes of sustainability
CMP understands that the mining of the future manages its impacts on the territory and therefore promotes a series of actions to reduce them. Thus, they have achieved that 46% of the water they use is desalinated and seek to reduce fresh water consumption by 30% by 2024.
In addition, they have different high technology and innovation projects that have allowed them to recover the iron they produce and reduce mining waste. They are also implementing a comprehensive plan to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030, through the decarbonization of its Pellet Plant in Huasco and an electromobility program.
