Tuesday, April 25, 2023 – The second day of Expomin 2023 was marked by “sustainability day”, an instance in which high authorities and experts in the field participated in its international congress, presenting the main challenges of mining in terms of sustainability, and how the different mining companies and suppliers are giving more prominence to the promotion of renewable energies. In addition, the first day of the business roundtable was held in the dome located next to the convention center, where various representatives of mining companies and industry suppliers participated in planned meetings, in an environment conducive to negotiations, promoting contacts between entrepreneurs, institutions and organizations wishing to do business, developing associative relationships or strategic alliances. The sustainability day, held at the Parque Fisa convention center, consisted of four panels: “Panel 3: Trends in sustainability, socio-environmental axes”, “Panel 4: Energy efficiency in mining, reducing our carbon footprint”, “Panel 5: Circular mining, challenges and opportunities oriented to waste management” and “Panel 6: Desalination technologies, socio-environmental impacts and opportunities”. The day was marked by the strong commitment of the mining industry to take care of the environment, thinking about environmental factors, thus seeking to invest in strategies related to sustainability, thinking about taking care of the carbon footprint, the welfare of communities, and the corporate responsibility to encourage sustainability. Also, during the conference, environmental regulations were analyzed in accordance with international advances, both in terms of technology and public policies. On this commitment, Sergio Hernández, executive director of Aprimin and moderator of Panel 4, added that “when there are complaints from the community on social issues of occupational safety and the environment, the truth is that I am surprised that mining is always responding in the first place of all the productive sectors. This is because Chile has state-of-the-art technologies and can react in this way, thanks to the existence of a chain of suppliers that respond to these demands. Because whenever the mining companies ask, the suppliers comply. I am surprised that any challenge in mining is overcome”. On the other hand, the panelists valued and highlighted the realization of this day oriented especially to sustainability. At the event, Rene Aguilar, Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs of Antofagasta Minerals commented that “it has been very relevant to have generated this day in particular, focused on sustainability, because clearly sustainability is what is generating differentiation in the industries and in particular in mining. We in Chile have a double challenge, which is to produce copper for everything that is going to be the low-carbon economy, but we have to produce that copper in a sustainable way, therefore, all these dialogues and opportunities to share only add up”. Viviana Huerta, senior program officer of ICMM -International Council on Mining and Metals- which brings together different mining companies from around the world in more than 50 countries, emphasizes that all its members have made a commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050. With respect to the international congress, he adds that, “these spaces are instances that allow us to connect with the different initiatives that are being developed among different actors. They favor collaboration and interaction between the relevant actors and, of course, it is an instance where many benefits can be obtained, reaching great results thanks to this panel and the fair”. Along the same lines, Nicole Porcile, vice-president of sustainability and corporate affairs at CODELCO, comments that, “Expomin opened up with this panel and that is a good sign. I believe that all the companies that participated had a lot of things to say and I think we have a common denominator, which is the importance of suppliers. The biggest challenge is how we can influence and change the business model in our value chain”. This Wednesday 26th the congress will continue with four panels: “Panel 7: SONAMI Responsible Sourcing Committee”, “Panel 8: Presentation of projects-Cobres”, “Panel 9: Presentation of Lithium-Gold and other projects”, “Panel 10: IOT, digitalization and technology 4.0 in mining”. First day of the Business Roundtable The Expomin 2023 Business Roundtable began on Tuesday, April 25 and will continue until Wednesday, April 26, in the dome located next to the Parque Fisa Convention Center. This event brought together various suppliers to the mining world, starting with meetings with representatives from Peru, Colombia and Brazil. It also includes the national participation of the mining companies Codelco, Teck, Antofagasta Minerals, BHP, Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP), Angloamerican, among others. The initiative seeks to connect the Chilean and international mining ecosystem with strategic meetings. These instances will allow the exchange and dialogue between experts in the sector.
